Taraika

Whatonga was travelling past Heretaunga

(Hastings) on the Waka Kurahaupo, from

Hawaiki. His wife Hotuwaipara was pregnant

and pricked her finger on the spine of a fish

(rock cod), this triggered the birth of her son,

who she named Tariki “Spine of the Fish”.

He travelled and lived the Wellington

area as NgaTara.
