Awarua and Rereroa and Mana Island

The Taniwha Awarua and Albatross Rereroa were friends, but Awarua wanted to be as good a flyer as Rereroa. Unfortunately his wings were very small and he could not fly very high. So he asked Rereroa to teach him. Rereroa told him to eat lots  of fish, and he would eventually be strong enough to fly high. When he was ready, Rereroa told him to go to the top of Te Maunga Whitireia to gain more height. Awarua launched himself but still could not fly high enough, so that he flew too close to Mana Island and sliced the top off.
